Summertime Tips
The Ants Go Marching one by one...
In the warmer months up in the mountains, the ants seem to be able to sniff out sweets and crumbs like nobody's business. And they are coming for it! Here are my top tips to avoid getting ants during your stay.
1) Bring containers or ziploc bags for any opened food you are not storing in the refrigerator. Sorry we do not supply them...in the past they have mysteriously disappeared after a few guests.
2) Be aware of condensation on the coasters you are using. If you have been drinking anything sweet (like sodas or juice), best to rinse the coaster when done using it. The little condensation ring seems to be the first target of Big Bear ants.
3) if you really want to be proactive, here is an all natural ant repellant that I use at home to keep ants away. In a spray bottle, fill halfway with water, add a cup of white vinegar, a dash of lemon juice and as much lavender oil as you like to mask the vinegar smell. Ants do not like this combo, and I spray it on the kitchen counters and eating surfaces.
Beat the heat
When you first arrive, the condo may be warm and a bit stuffy. After it is cleaned and disinfected, all of the windows and doors are closed. So the air has been stagnant for a bit.
Simply open the two sliding glass doors (master bedroom and dining area) for a good cross breeze, and you can feel free to turn on the ceiling fans. Like most places in Big Bear, we do not have air conditioning. But the ceiling fans do the trick so very well!
The pool is open from 10am to 10pm. Feel free to enjoy it. But please be considerate of the hours. The city government has enacted an ordinance for renters that they may not be in the pools or hot tubs past 10pm and are subject to fines if someone calls code enforcement.
Kayaking on the Lake is so fun and easy, even for a total beginner like me. You get a 15% discounts on rentals from GET BOARDS, right in front of our unit, and can easily bring your kayak or stand up paddle board to the park next door to launch them at the beach.
